Abstract. Seismoelectrodynamics is a theory of excitation in the earth's crust of an alternating electromagnetic field in the course propagation of seismic waves, and at ruptures of a continuity of rocks in the foci of earthquakes. The purpose of this paper is to tell at the first time the story of formation of the seismoelectrodynamics. The paper gives modern ideas on mechanoelectromagnetic transformations in the rocks, on the propagation of co-seismic electromagnetic oscillations, and on the generation of electromagnetic pulses in the rupture of rock in earthquake foci. A spectral-polarization method for separating seismomagnetic signals against a noise background is described. The principal importance of setting up the new observations for strengthening the experimental foundations of seismoelectrodynamics is emphasized.
Keywords: earthquakes, seismic waves, electromagnetic oscillations, mechanoelectromagnetic transformations
