Highlights

– geophysics has made a huge contribution to the development of nuclear testing control

– creation of control methods madу it possible to conclude the 1963 Treaty

Abstract. August 2018 marks the 55th anniversary of the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, signed by the Governments of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America in Moscow. It was concluded largely under the pressure of public opinion around the world, but it was made possible by the considerable success of scientists, in particular geophysicists, who were able to create effective methods for monitoring nuclear explosions.

Keywords: Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, nuclear explosions, nuclear test control methods, contribution of geophysics
